"Black Holes"
Black holes are the most extreme phenomena in the universe. They push the limits of our imagination and drive our formulations of the laws of nature to their breaking point. Vatche Sahakian, Harvey Mudd College associate professor of physics, discusses the theory of relativity -- both special and general -- which allows us to understand a cornucopia of puzzles associated with black holes.

This public lecture on ideas at the forefront of modern theoretical physics is aimed at a general audience. We will talk about the philosophical underpinnings of modern physics; the fuzzy world as described by quantum mechanics; black holes and the skewing of space and time by motion and energy; the latest perspectives on cosmology and our universe, and the puzzles they lead us to; and finally we will touch upon new ideas from string theory and the frontiers of physics. Visual interactive simulations will be used in lieu of equations and mathematics. The target audience includes anyone with a high school education.
