Guest speaker David Shearer, executive director of Claremont Heritage, will review the groundbreaking 1950 exhibition Sixteen Architects; identify innovative architecture and design that emerged after WWII; examine shifts in culture and lifestyle; and discuss other influences: the G.I Bill, the Case Study House Program, new materials and technology, the automobile, leisure activities and indoor/outdoor living. Architect Whitney Smith curated Sixteen Architects, with students from Scripps College's design department -- under the direction of Jean Goodwin Ames -- designing and constructing the display system. Julius Shulman's photographs of the gallery exhibit were featured in the April 1950 edition of Arts & Architecture Magazine.
