(909) 607-1268A lecture on the Crescent City's cultural recovery, and political struggles by investigative journalist, and coauthor of Up From the Cradle of Jazz. The writer will show a short film on jazz funerals to examine the role of music-as-memory in a city still rebuilding from the epic flood that followed Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Discussion explores multiple political failures as well as the impact of crack cocaine on the funeral culture, which has become rowdier, rougher, and in the view of mainstream musicians, more a mirror on the drug economy than memory of jazz.
